Shots Fired Near A Gun Violence Awareness Event In Mount Vernon

“Gun violence is not a major problem in Westchester County,” CE Latimer said Friday, March 26th at the press conference announcing the launching of the Westchester County Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce. Maybe he should tell that to the people of Mount Vernon!

There were shots fired Friday, June 7th near a gun violence awareness event for the National Gun Violence Awareness Day event outside the Doles Center located at 6th Avenue and 4th Street in Mount Vernon.

News 12 reported, detectives say police were already outside the Doles Center for the National Gun Violence Awareness Day event near 6th Avenue and 4th Street when they heard the gunfire.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman who had a constituent services table at the event tweet about the event hours later;

Mayor Patterson-Howard’s issued a statement to Black Westchester on the shooting incident at 6th Ave and 4th Street, hours after the event:

“This afternoon at the Doles Center, hundreds of children, adults, and seniors gathered for an amazing Gun Violence Prevention Event. The air was filled with music, laughter, prayers, the aroma of barbeque, and a sense of unity. The Youth Shelter of Westchester, Moms Demand Action, The City of Mount Vernon, The Youth Bureau, Department of Recreation, Nubians with Attributes, SNUG, 914 L.O.C.K., Youth Cred, Cupcake Cutie, and other community partners, joined by the Police and Fire Department, hosted the event. Despite shots being fired in the vicinity, unrelated to the event, we had a positive gathering. We will not be deterred. Mount Vernon is a vibrant community filled with hard-working, honest people, children, and seniors who deserve to live in a safe, hopeful, and healthy community. We will continue our work towards that end. We are a resilient and resourceful community of faith. We will not be terrorized by a few people who engage in senseless violence. We will provide services and support to people who want to change their lives for the better. We will actively investigate, arrest, and incarcerate people who do harm and commit violent acts in our community. I have great confidence in our police department and the hard-working officers who work to protect the community. Community safety is not just the responsibility of the police but the community as a whole. We will continue to engage the community in this work. We encourage anyone who has information to contact the Detective Division at 914-665-2510.”

Nicholas Mastrogiorgio President of the Mount Vernon Police Benevolent Association blamed part of the problem of senseless gun violence in Mount Vernon on mass exodus of offices. Despite being budgeted for 208 cops the MVPD current only has 164 members and has lost 140 members due to transfers to other departments and retirements in the last four and a half years.

“This shooting that occurred in such close proximity to a rally against gun violence is a frightening example of how dangerous the situation is in the city of Mount Vernon. We’re down over 40 officers with more leaving this month. We continue to loose more Officers than we’re able to hire, If Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard and department leadership don’t take immediate steps to improve conditions at the Mount Vernon Police Department our officers and Mount Vernon residents will continue to be in harms way. And things will continue to get worse.”

Police say no one was hit by the gunfire and that there was no evidence of property damage.

Residents and activist like Jesse Van Lew of Save Mount Vernon have been calling for a plan to address this senseless gun violence and more gun buyback events in Mount Vernon, especially during times of gun violence awareness.

Police tell Black Westchester no one was hit by the gunfire and that there was no evidence of property damage. They are asking anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department Detective Division at 914-665-2510. All calls will be kept confidential. Anyone can also submit an anonymous tip via the department’s “Text-A-Tip” by texting “MVPD” and the tip to 847411.

County Executive George Latimer who is challenging Congressman Jamaal Bowman in the upcoming Democratic Primary said that “gun violence is not a major problem in Westchester County.” maybe he should tell that to the residents of his hometown, Mount Vernon where according to the MVPD PBA President, “as of May 26th there were 15 related assaults so far this year, That is the same number number to the same time, last year.”

AIPAC’s Controversial Funding Strategy Targets First Black Congressman In CD 16

In a groundbreaking victory, Jamaal Bowman made history in 2020 by becoming the first Black congressman to represent New York’s 16th Congressional District. However, his progressive stance on issues such as calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, abortion rights, and gun violence prevention has put him in the crosshairs of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The powerful lobbying group, known for its bipartisan support for Israel, has now sparked outrage among progressives due to its controversial practice of funneling money from Republican donors into Democratic primary races.

Having the first Black congressman represent their district has significantly boosted the confidence and sense of empowerment within the Black community by providing long-awaited representation and a direct voice advocating for their interests at the federal level. This historic achievement symbolizes the breaking of a racial barrier, demonstrating that Black candidates can attain high political office and inspiring confidence among Black constituents, especially the youth, about their own leadership potential.

With a representative who shares their racial identity and understands the unique challenges the Black community faces, there is greater trust and assurance that their concerns will be genuinely prioritized. The presence of a Black congressman can galvanize the Black community, fostering a collective sense of empowerment, increased political engagement, and belief in their ability to influence the political process.

Furthermore, Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s leadership serves as a visible role model, instilling confidence among Black youth about their prospects for success and encouraging their civic participation, ultimately bolstering the community’s pride, engagement, and optimism. But all that will be taken away because he speaks for truth, justice, and equality for all. Organizations like AIPAC resist that type of talk in the halls of Congress.

AIPAC appears willing to spend millions of dollars to unseat Bowman, having already raised more than $1.6 million for his challenger, George Latimer, through the end of April. Notably, around 40 percent of these donors had previously contributed to Republican candidates through AIPAC or WinRed, compared to just 10 percent of Latimer’s non-AIPAC donors. This has led many Black grassroots organizations to accuse AIPAC and its Republican megadonors of targeting him for his progressive positions, which he claims stand against “Donald Trump’s MAGA extremism.”

It has already been reported that AIPAC and its Republican donors are intentionally targeting progressive members of the Congressional Black Caucus with right-wing primary challenges. If this process is allowed to continue having Black and Brown representatives will be a thing of the past.

The controversy has intensified as AIPAC’s affiliated super PAC, United Democracy Project (UDP), has emerged as the biggest outside spender in Democratic primaries this year. UDP has spent a staggering $19.8 million, with $9.3 million alone being poured into the Bowman- Latimer race. This spending far exceeds that of the next 10 biggest spenders combined, highlighting the unprecedented lengths AIPAC is willing to go to influence the outcome of this historic congressional seat.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s super PAC, the United Democracy Project (UDP), has booked $1.9 million in TV ads to influence voters in the high-profile Democratic primary race in New York’s Sixteenth Congressional District, according to the media-tracking firm AdImpact.

Progressives argue that AIPAC’s involvement in Democratic primaries is a form of Republican meddling designed to oust progressives who have been vocal supporters of Palestinian rights and align with a broader progressive agenda. They accuse AIPAC of using the Israel-Palestine issue to attract Republican dollars and undermine the progressive movement, particularly targeting the first Black congressman to represent the district.

The controversy highlights the evolving partisan dynamics around support for Israel, with many Democrats, including establishment figures, now advocating for conditional U.S. aid amid rising civilian casualties in Gaza. A recent poll found that most voters in New York’s 16th Congressional District were more inclined to back a candidate who favored a ceasefire in Gaza, like Congressman Bowman – further underscoring the shifting political landscape on this issue. The growing calls for a reassessment of the U.S. stance toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict reflect a broader realignment within the Democratic Party, as it grapples with changing sentiments among its base.

The race for New York’s 16th Congressional District has taken on heightened significance, with progressives fiercely backing incumbent Jamaal Bowman in a bid to solidify his groundbreaking 2020 win and the principles he espouses. The results of this contest could reverberate beyond the district itself, potentially shaping the trajectory of the Westchester Democratic Party – particularly its posture on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its attunement to the concerns and priorities of Black constituents within the party ranks.

The Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC Unendorsed Mondaire Jones

0

WORKING FAMILIES PARTY ALSO PULLS ITS FUNDING AND SUPPORT OF MONDAIRE JONES AND THE HITS KEEP COMING

Its been a rough week for former congressman Mondaire Jones who inserted himself into the contentious New York 16th Congressional District race by endorsing Westchester County executive George Latimer, the AIPAC-backed challenger over incumbent congressman Jamaal Bowman. In the process, Jones has provoked the displeasure of his former progressive colleagues in the House.

First he had his Black Card revoked by key members of The Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) the highest ranking African American woman appointed to Democratic Leadership, serving as Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (111th Congress) and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (109th & 110th Congresses), Rep Summer Lee (D-PA) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.).

“He positioned himself as Squad-adjacent during his time in Congress,” Rep. Cori Bush, a member of the progressive caucus who hails from Missouri, said in an interview. “And then now, when it is beneficial to him, he will go against someone who actually was there for him.”

Other progressives rallied in support around Bowman this week, including fellow New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), who said “Dem unity means supporting Bowman.” Now the Congressional Progressive is taking back their endorsement of Jones.

“A number of factors led to the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC rescinding the endorsement of Mondaire Jones,” Evan Brown, the PAC’s executive director, said in a statement. “This was a unanimous decision of our PAC board.”

The CPC said Thursday, June 6th, it has rescinded its endorsement of former Rep. Mondaire Jones, D-N.Y., after he endorsed the primary challenger to a top Progressive Caucus member and fellow Black New York Democrat, Rep. Jamaal Bowman, over Bowman’s criticism of Israel.

Wednesday, June 5th, the CPC PAC notified the Mondaire for Congress campaign that it has rescinded its endorsement due to Jones’ endorsement of Latimer over Bowman.

The NY-17 Democratic congressional candidate tells Black Westchester: “I have no regrets about standing up for what I firmly believe in. I have known and worked with George Latimer for years. I used to represent thousands of people in what is now New York’s 16th Congressional District, and have deep relationships there.”

Earlier this week, Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., hinted at the move, calling Jones’ decision to back his former colleague’s rival “horrific.”

“Honestly, I’m just so disgusted by it,” she told NBC News. “This is a former colleague of his, an incumbent member who is a top-priority candidate for us, an incumbent for us in the Progressive Caucus.”
Jayapal said she believes Jones endorsed Latimer “because he thinks it’s obviously politically expedient, but I don’t, and it’s not the way we operate as progressives.”

“We can’t be inconsistent where we have a top-priority incumbent that we’re spending money on, and one of our candidates … who is attacking that person,” she continued. “So we stand firmly behind Jamaal Bowman; we’re going to do everything we can to help Jamaal win. And I hope we have Jamaal back in Congress.”

Latimer has the support of 12 Democratic county committees, former governor David Paterson, the Civil Service Employees Association, and former representative Eliot Engel, whom Bowman unseated during his first bid for Congress. Bowman has been backed by Democratic leadership in the chamber, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Representative Nydia Velázquez, Senator Bernie Sanders, the United Auto Workers, and the Working Families Party, which seems unconcerned by Jones’s snub of the congressman.
“We don’t give much weight to the endorsement. Voters know that Jamaal shows up for his district, and has since his days as a principal and teacher,” said Ravi Mangla, a spokesman for the Working Families Party, in a statement.

The influential New York Working Families Party is also pulling its funding and ground support for Democrat Mondaire Jones after he threw his fellow Democrat Jamaal Bowman under the political bus this week by endorsing his opponent in a tough Congressional primary. it was all good just a week ago!

If the CPC un-endorsed Jones for supporting Latimer, they are sending a clear message to CE Latimer that they do not consider him the progressive he touts himself to be. In the words of Kendrick Lamar, the CPC is saying “They Not Like Us.”

Jews for Jamaal react to Mondaire Jones endorsement of George Latimer

In response to the news that former Member of Congress Mondaire Jones endorsed George Latimer in the NY-16 primary “to stand up for my Jewish constituents,” Jews for Jamaal released the following statement from Ron Lieberman, a Jewish resident of Piermont, NY:

“My wife and I were initially thrilled to have someone like Mondaire Jones to support for Congress. But as proud Jews, we are deeply disappointed that he would go out of his way to endorse George Latimer, whose campaign is being funded by MAGA donors and the pro-war lobby AIPAC, the same people supporting Mike Lawler. I was shocked to learn that Mondaire Jones himself has received over $200,000 from AIPAC throughout his career. And I find it deeply offensive that Jones claimed to be doing this for his Jewish constituents – this move reeks of opportunism.”

On the point about Republican money, the Jews for Jamaal coalition added:

“As a diverse coalition of New York Jews, we reject continued use of Republican money to interfere with Democratic Party primaries with the aim of unseating a popular progressive Black Democrat. As a Congressmember, Jamaal Bowman has a solid track record delivering for this district which is precisely why Republicans are choosing not to fight for votes in the general election with ideas, but in our own party’s primaries with their own agenda. We know that when the organized money doubles up on antidemocratic tactics, organized people will double down on our grassroots support.”

Open Letter To George Latimer From Westchester Progressives

7

We are Westchester Progressives, from all walks of life, who believe that no matter what we look like, we all deserve dignity. We worked hard to elect George Latimer because we thought he believed it too.
But when George let a right-wing lobby recruit him to run against Jamaal Bowman, our district’s first Black Congressman and one of the most important, progressive champions in Congress, we realized that George Latimer isn’t who we thought he was.

Funded By Republicans: We elected George to get MAGA Republicans out of Westchester. Now he’s wining and dining with top Trump Donors like Alex Dubitsky, directly accepting over one million dollars from a right-wing lobby group, along with $25 million in attack ads from their SuperPAC. Incredibly, they even got over 1000 Republicans to register as Democrats just to vote for Latimer in the Democratic Primary.

Stoking Islamophobia. After Trump was elected, so many Muslims came together to elect George Latimer to fight back against the kind of division and discrimination they faced after 9/11. But since he started running for Congress, Latimer has spread hateful rhetoric about Muslims and accused people of being “Hamas supporters” just for wanting peace.

Dividing Democrats. We’ve worked so hard to build the Democratic party so we could keep unseating Republicans. Instead, we’re now defending our top progressive leader… from George Latimer! Latimer is willing to risk Democratic control of Congress just to quench his insatiable thirst for power. Latimer is dividing the Democratic party when we should be uniting.

Why are all these Trump backers throwing their support behind George Latimer? And how can he accept money from groups threatening our democracy? Westchester deserves better. New York State deserves better. Our country deserves better. And the Democratic Party deserves better.

We deserve Congressman Jamaal Bowman who, in two terms, has proven himself to be the same thing he was during his ten years as a Principal of a top Bronx public school: a fearless progressive champion who fights for every single one of us in this district, this state and this country. Jamaal knows that sticking for his principles and values means inviting the most expensive Congressional primary ever. But it will take a lot more than George Latimer and his GOP and special interest backers to scare Jamaal Bowman and the true progressives of CD-16 who stand with him.

So here are the real progressive results: George Latimer lost us. We stand for our progressive principles, and with our progressive Principal. We worked hard to elect George Latimer.

Now, we’ll work even harder to stop him.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren Endorses Congressman Jamaal Bowman

Progressive Senator Is Latest Addition to Broad Democratic Coalition Backing Congressman Bowman’s Re-election

MOUNT VERNON — Senator Elizabeth Warren today announced her endorsement of Congressman Bowman’s re-election campaign, adding to a strong Democratic coalition that already includes key community, state, and national leaders like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Bernie Sanders, Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, UAW, 1199 SEIU, DC37, and more.

“Corporate interests are spending millions against Congressman Jamaal Bowman because he’s fighting hard to deliver good jobs, quality education, Medicare for All, and a Green New Deal,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren. “Together, we’ve worked with President Biden to protect renters and have plans to lower housing costs, and I look forward to continued partnership, shoulder-shoulder, to stand up to MAGA extremists and deliver for working families.”

Senator Warren and Congressman Bowman have a long history of joining forces to push for progressive legislative efforts – since her first endorsement in his first primary in 2020. During Congressman Bowman’s first term, Senator Warren and Congressman Bowman co-introduced the Care For All Agenda, which calls for expanding and strengthening the care economy and improving conditions for care workers nationwide. In the Congressman’s second term, the legislators co-authored the bicameral Babies Over Billionaires Act, which would implement a tax on households making over $100 million annually, and invest this revenue in programs that support children. Last year, Congressman Bowman and Senator Warren wrote to President Biden to take executive action on the affordable housing crisis. Just weeks later the President took action to protect tenants’ rights and introduced a Renters Bill of Rights. Most recently, Senator Warren and Congressman Bowman co-led a successful letter urging Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas to lengthen the automatic extension period for work permits, resulting in over 800,000 immigrants retaining their jobs and immigration status.

“From demanding billionaires pay their fair share with the support of President Biden to our shared efforts to make housing affordable, protect tenants, and cancel student debt, I’m proud to call Senator Warren a partner in our progressive vision. She knows firsthand how to fight back against the billionaire class, and I’m proud to have Senator Warren in our corner,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman. “Together, we’re united in our mission to build a brighter, more equitable future for all, where the needs of working people are uplifted and corporations are held to account.”

Asthe June 25 primary draws closer, the coalition supporting Bowman has grown daily, mobilizing the campaign to increase its ability to connect with voters, and empowering community members to speak with more and more fellow voters. In just the first week of June so far, Bowman supporters have quadrupled their average weekly number of doors knocked compared to May, and the campaign has received over 500 unique sign ups for events.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s campaign for re-election has been endorsed by Democratic leadership, members of Congress, and local electeds including Senator Bernie Sanders, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, House Minority Whip Katherine Clarke, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Congresswoman Cori Bush, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Congresswoman Summer Lee, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, State Senator Jamaal Bailey, New York City Councilmember Kevin Riley, Mount Vernon City Councilmember Derrick Thompson, Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Nicola Armacost, Hastings-on-Hudson Trustee Georgia Lopez, Hastings-on-Hudson Trustee Douglass Alligood, Mamaroneck Trustee Leilani Yizar Reid, and Mamaroneck Trustee Manny Rawlings. Bowman has also been endorsed by organizations across issue areas including 350 Action, 504 Dems, Alliance for Quality Education, Bend The Arc Jewish Action, Congressional Black Caucus PAC, Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) SEIU, Citizen Action of NY, College Democrats, DC37, Friends of the Earth Action, Human Rights Campaign PAC, IfNotNow, Indivisible Brooklyn, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, Justice Democrats, League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, Make the Road Action, Muslim Democratic Club of NY, National Nurses United, New York Communities for Change, New York Progressive Action Network (NYPAN), New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), Our Revolution, People’s Action, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, SEIU 1199, Sierra Club Independent Action, Sunrise Movement, Teachers Unify To End Gun Violence, The Jewish Vote, UAW Region 9A, and the Working Families Party.

OpenSecrets: Biden Top Recipient of Pro-Israel Money Over 34 Years

Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden, the highest recipient of pro-Israel lobby donations over the past 34 years according to OpenSecrets.org, has vehemently defended Israel against war crimes and genocide charges in international courts. This defense comes as the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, led by members who have also received significant funding from pro-Israel groups, passed legislation to sanction the International Criminal Court (ICC) for its efforts to seek arrest warrants for top Israeli officials.

OpenSecrets data reveals that Biden has received a staggering $5,688,069 from pro-Israel groups and individuals throughout his political career as a Senator, Vice President, and now President. In response to the ICC’s probe into alleged war crimes committed by Israel during the war in Gaza, Biden called the actions “outrageous” and stated, “There is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas.”

The House’s Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, which aims to bar US entry and restrict US-based property transactions for ICC officials involved in the probe, was heavily promoted by lawmakers who have also benefited from pro-Israel lobby money. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who pushed the bill, has received $491,126 from pro-Israel lobbyists. Other key supporters include House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Mike McCaul (R-TX), who has received $790,085; Chip Roy (R-TX), who has received $43,979; and Brian Mast (R-FL), who has received $610,196 from pro-Israel lobbying groups.

Critics argue that the actions of both Biden and the House representatives demonstrate a disregard for international law and the ICC’s authority to investigate potential war crimes. They maintain that the significant pro-Israel donations raise questions about the influence of special interest groups on U.S. foreign policy and the government’s willingness to hold allies accountable for human rights abuses.

Supporters of Biden and the House bill contend that the ICC’s probe is politically motivated and that Israel has a right to defend itself against Hamas, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization. They argue that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is complex and cannot be reduced to a simple matter of war crimes.

The data comes from OpenSecrets’ analysis of Federal Election Commission filings and other public records. The non-partisan group has tracked the influence of money on electoral politics for nearly 40 years.

As the U.S. grapples with its response to the ICC’s investigation and the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, voters must scrutinize their elected officials’ financial ties and consider how these connections may shape policy decisions. The debate surrounding the ICC probe and the House’s sanctions bill underscores the need for greater transparency in campaign finance and a deeper examination of the role of special interest groups in U.S. politics, particularly concerning matters of international law and human rights.

Did Mondaire Jones turn his back on the Black community by not supporting Jamaal Bowman? The Congressional Black Caucus says YES!

Former House member Mondaire Jones caused a stir among progressive Democrats and the Westchester Black community after endorsing Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s primary opponent, George Latimer. Jones’s decision to back Latimer has drawn sharp criticism from his former colleagues, particularly those in the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and members of the Westchester Black community.

It has been reported that Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., expressed her disbelief, stating, “I am appalled.”

Rep. Summer Lee, D-Penn. called the endorsement “incredibly disappointing.” “Here we have a former CPC and CBC member who’s endorsing against both a Progressive and Black man who was the first Black man in his seat,” she said. “So it couldn’t be me. But I think and I hope that people will look at that for what that is.”

“It’s disgusting,” said Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., “Is that who he wants to be? Someone that the members can’t even trust? Someone that the members know will be your friend one day, and then as soon as it’s beneficial to him, will completely not only turn on you, but will go and support the person that is challenging you?

Jones defended his endorsement, citing his long-standing relationship with Latimer and the need to stand up for his Jewish constituents, as he and Bowman hold “deeply different views on Israel.” Pro-Israel Democratic donors and groups have heavily invested in unseating Bowman this election cycle.

Mondaire Jones’ endorsement of George Latimer, Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s primary opponent, has sparked outrage among grassroots activists and progressive Democrats, particularly within the Black community. Many see Jones’ decision as a clear sign that he is turning his back on the Black community and disregarding the importance of Black representation in Congress.

Bowman, the first Black representative in his district, has been a strong progressive voice and an ally to the Black community. Jones, a former member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), has drawn sharp criticism for endorsing Latimer, with some viewing it as a betrayal of his former colleagues and the constituents they represent.

Many Westchester critics argue that Jones’ endorsement of Latimer disregards the plight of the Palestinian people, an issue that has gained increasing attention from world leaders and human rights advocates. These activists assert that Israel’s actions towards Palestinians amount to genocide, and they believe that Jones’ support for Latimer, who is backed by pro-Israel groups, essentially ignores this pressing concern.

The strong reactions from CBC members and grassroots activists suggest that Jones’ decision has exacerbated a party that is already divided. Many view his actions as prioritizing his own political interests over the needs and concerns of the Black community and failing to stand up for the rights of Palestinians.

Jones faces a competitive race against Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, who has also received money from AIPAC. Jones’s endorsement of Latimer may have far-reaching consequences for his standing within the Black community and his relationships with former colleagues in the CBC. Jones’s loss of the support of the Black community is a crucial blow for Democrats trying to gain control of the House of Representatives in CD 17. Jones’s actions just proved the old saying in the Black community, ” Just Because You’re My Skinfolk, Dont Mean You’re My Kinfolk. The controversy surrounding his decision has added fuel to the already heated debate about the importance of Black representation, solidarity within the Black political community, and the role of pro-Israel Super PACs like AIPAC in shaping Westchester politics.

WBPC responds to NBEAF: ‘You can’t speak for Black people in CD 16 when you have done No Work for Black people in CD16

Controversy Surrounds National Black Empowerment Action Fund’s Support for George Latimer

The National Black Empowerment Action Fund (NBEAF) has recently announced its support for George Latimer, a Democratic candidate running for office in New York, while simultaneously opposing Congressman Jamaal Bowman. This move has drawn criticism from the Westchester Black Political Conference (WBPC), an organization representing the political interests of Black and Brown people in Westchester County.

According to a report by Politico, NBEAF received substantial funding from a Super PAC founded by Daniel Loeb, a hedge fund billionaire and Republican megadonor who has also directly donated to George Latimer. Loeb has faced controversy in the past for comments he made about Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the first Black woman to serve as Majority Leader of the New York State Senate.

The WBPC has expressed deep concern regarding NBEAF’s motives, citing the organization’s ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a lobbying group that the WBPC claims has consistently failed to prioritize the interests of the Black community. Damon K. Jones, Co-Founder of the WBPC, stated, “It is highly troubling that an organization claiming to advocate for Black people would align itself with AIPAC, which lobbies for billions of dollars to be sent overseas to support war while Black communities continue to face underfunding and neglect.”

Furthermore, the WBPC has condemned NBEAF for labeling Congressman Jamaal Bowman as “too radical” for Black residents of Congressional District 16, arguing that such a statement demonstrates a disconnect from the lived experiences of Black individuals in the district and Westchester County as a whole.

NBEAF’s leadership, which includes Darius Jones, a veteran of AIPAC, and Richard St. Paul, a member of AIPAC’s National Council, has also come under scrutiny. The WBPC has questioned the organization’s lack of history in advocating for Black people and grassroots organizations in Westchester County, suggesting that their sudden involvement in the area raises questions about their true agenda.

In a recent POLITICO article, Darius Jones of the National Black Empowerment Action Fund (NBEAF) suggested that African Americans need to reconsider how they “romanticize” certain Black elected leaders. The Westchester Black Political Conference (WBPC) has issued a strong response to Jones’ statement.

“What the Black community is doing is evaluating you and your absence in our communities,” said a WBPC spokesperson. “You can’t speak for us when you have no track record of working with or for the people of Congressional District 16.”

The WBPC’s response highlights the growing tension between grassroots Black organizations and groups like NBEAF, which has faced criticism for its ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its lack of involvement in the local Black community.

As the controversy unfolds, both sides remain committed to their respective positions. The WBPC has vowed to continue advocating for policies that uplift and empower Black communities, while NBEAF maintains its support for George Latimer and its belief in the importance of a strong U.S.-Israel relationship, ignoring rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on Isreal committing genocide and the International Criminal Court seeking warrants Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity

WBPC Response by BLACK WESTCHESTER MAGAZINE on Scribd

Several other grassroots Westchester organizations have signed on to the WBPC’s statement, including Blacks in Law Enforcement of America, Sandy Bernabei Antiracist Alliance, and 100 Black Fathers for Change. This show of solidarity demonstrates the growing concern among local activists about the need for genuine, community-based representation and advocacy for Black residents in Westchester County.
