When Defenders of Sovereignty Are Branded as Threats: The Hypocrisy of General Langley’s Words on Burkina Faso

Date:

When General Michael Langley, head of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), labels Captain Ibrahim Traoré—the leader of Burkina Faso—as a “threat to his own people,” we must pause and ask: Who truly threatens Africa’s future—its sovereign leaders or foreign generals stationed thousands of miles away?

Let’s not ignore the facts: Captain Traoré has already survived multiple assassination attempts since taking power—an all-too-familiar fate for African leaders who reject Western control and fight for true independence. History tells us that when an African leader dares to stand on sovereignty, reclaim natural resources, and unite with neighboring nations against foreign influence, he becomes a target, not because he endangers his people, but because he threatens global interests.

Captain Traoré’s so-called “crime” is daring to reclaim Burkina Faso’s gold—not for multinational corporations or foreign banks, but to empower his nation. His bold plan to use the country’s wealth to fund infrastructure, development, and self-reliance exposes the uncomfortable truth: Africa’s poverty is manufactured, maintained by those who profit from its resources while keeping its people in chains of dependency.

But Traoré is not alone. Burkina Faso has joined forces with Mali and Niger to form the Alliance of Sahel States—a mutual defense pact designed to protect their sovereignty from both terrorist threats and foreign intervention. Together, these nations have expelled French troops, rejected Western military dictates, and charted a course toward self-reliance. This regional unity represents a direct challenge to AFRICOM and the broader neo-colonial grip on West Africa.

And that is why General Langley and others are sounding alarms.

The late Muammar Gaddafi wasn’t just demonized for his internal policies—he was targeted because he dared to dream beyond Libya’s borders. Gaddafi envisioned a United States of Africa, a continent united under one government, with a gold-backed currency designed to break free from the IMF, World Bank, and Western financial exploitation. That vision posed an existential threat to those who profit from a divided and dependent Africa.

Picture of  Muammar Gaddafi with all the African Presidents on it to show his unity and support for a United States of Africa

So, like Thomas Sankara before him—who called out Western debt traps and fought for African dignity—Gaddafi was labeled a dictator, destabilized, and ultimately assassinated. His nation was left in ruins, and his dream of African unity was buried under NATO bombs.

It’s only a matter of time before Western media outlets begin saturating headlines with familiar phrases:

  • “Authoritarian rule in Burkina Faso”
  • “Human rights concerns under Traoré”
  • “Democracy at risk in the Sahel”

These narratives aren’t about protecting African citizens—they’re about justifying sanctions, covert operations, or even military action to regain control over a region slipping from Western hands.

We must remember how similar rhetoric was deployed to:

  • Justify NATO’s destruction of Libya.
  • Excuse France’s decades-long exploitation through the CFA franc.
  • Cover up the failures of AFRICOM, whose presence has coincided with a dramatic rise in terrorism across the Sahel.

When African leaders choose sovereignty over submission, Western powers don’t respond with respect—they respond with regime change tactics, both economic and military.

Captain Traoré’s vision, alongside Mali and Niger, represents more than national pride—it’s a blueprint for African independence. And that’s precisely why he’s being labeled a threat.

The true danger isn’t Traoré or the Alliance of Sahel States—it’s the desperation of foreign powers unwilling to let Africa control its own destiny. General Langley’s statement is not a defense of human rights—it’s a defense of geopolitical interests.

As media narratives intensify, Africans and the global diaspora must stay vigilant. Question the headlines. Follow the money. Recognize the patterns.

Africa doesn’t need AFRICOM’s protection.
It needs the freedom to determine its future—without being punished for daring to do so.

  1. Will MSNBC, CBS, NBC, CNN PAINT A TRUE PICTURE ABOUT BURKINA FASO AND THE REAL RECORD ABOUT CAPTAIN IBRAHIM TRAORE. AFRICA HAS CHANCE TO RISE LET’S ALL GET BEHIND IT AND PUSH HARD AGAINST THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE AFRICA FAIL. PEOPLE LIKE GEN. LANGLEY MUST BE CALLED OUT BY AFRICAN AMERICANS NOW.

  2. THIS MAKES ME BEYOND MAD, BUT NOT SURPRISED BY Michael Langley’s “white supremacist” position. Buffalo Soldiers & Black Miltia did the SAME THING, “PROTECTED ‘white’ settlers & killed their OWN PEOPLE (Prof Carol Anderson, “white rage”)! “INTEGRATION IS INFILRATION.” THIS is HOW caucasian CIA operates & HOW they RECRUIT blacks to go AGAINST their Own People. 3. What a well researched article. We, who know the truth, are shunned because we, are not afraid to say, that both political parties have blood on their hands. Ibrahim, is an amazing young man. Educated, humble, focused and a genius in mapping out what he wants for his people. I appreciated his shout-out to ADOS in America in his groundbreaking speech, about who thinks they are entitled to Africa’s riches, while disrespecting its people. Every black person on the planet should perform a day of prayer for Ibrahim. This should serve as shield to protect him from demonic forces.

  4. Thank you for this post , it takes all of us to let them know we are not in the 20 century no more where all the information and lies are controlled by them the elites .

  5. Why doesn’t general Langley tell the US citizens where is the gold at Fort Knox instead worrying about the gold Burkina Faso secured so as not to borrow from the World Bank or the IMF?

General Langley is defending the bloodsuckers of international bankers, but sometimes financial slavery has to be stopped.

Unfortunately, traitors to our race are generals also, and they will do the dirty works for their masters.

  6. We don’t need Gen Langley’s advice on our continent. He should take his military boots off our necks and go back home to serve his write supremacist masters. We, Africans do not need American soldiers or democracy going by what his government is doing in America today. Enough is enough and we stand by our son, Traore. We rather have our own son of Africa control our gold than the neo-colonial imperialist dictatorship of America.

  7. THIS!!! Everyday this. Thank you for pointing out how from now day one of African independence the West has worked to destabilize and even kill African leaders who put their countries above the Western powers’ demands. Africa rise, our very life is at stake!

  8. To me, America is a colony of lland grabbing thieves, diamondand other gem hunters and now it is time for the hunter to get capturedby the game!

I mean really, how far do they think they can go? It’s GAME OVER!

The new world is already here! So they need to snap outta that dream state!

  9. Why is General Michael Langley, and his American soldiers not invading boko haram and other terrorist groups in the region but planing to invade Burkina Faso, because of gold and the natural resources. There is no Goliath David cannot defeat …with all weapons Americans have, we are ready to support Burkina people:all African youth we will fight to save and protect our continent. If General Michael Langley failed to fight gun violence in his country we are going to hang his head in shame at museums in Ouagadougou ,

Mamdani’s Estate Tax Proposal Could Destroy Black Middle-Class Wealth in New York

And Why Too Many Black Leaders Refuse to Talk About It In politics, policies are often judged by their intentions. In economics, they are judged by their outcomes. That distinction matters when examining the estate tax proposal being pushed by Zohran Mamdani, which would dramatically lower the estate-tax exemption in New York from roughly $7 million to about $750,000 while raising the top rate as high as 50 percent. Supporters frame the proposal as a tax on the wealthy. But when viewed through the lens of economic reality,  the estate tax proposal could...

Money vs. Power: The Lesson Media Companies Should Learn From The Breakfast Club’s Netflix Deal

A line from the political drama House of Cards captures a truth that applies far beyond politics. The character Frank Underwood once said: “Money is the McMansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that has stood for centuries.” That quote perfectly explains the debate surrounding the recent distribution changes involving The Breakfast Club, including...

The Death of Black Owned Media: The Last Piece of Black Ownership at BET Is Gone

The recent buyout of Tyler Perry’s ownership stake in BET+ marks more than a corporate restructuring. It signals the end of the last remaining piece of Black ownership connected to the BET ecosystem. With Paramount Global purchasing Perry’s stake, the streaming service is now fully controlled by the same corporation that already owns Black Entertainment Television. BET+ is expected to be folded into Paramount+ as part of the company’s broader strategy to consolidate its streaming platforms. For many viewers, this may look like a routine business decision. Large media companies restructure assets all the time. But the symbolism of this particular transaction is difficult to ignore. Tyler Perry’s investment in BET+ represented the final direct ownership link between Black capital and the BET brand. While BET itself had long been part of a corporate media structure, Perry’s stake in the streaming platform meant that a major Black creator still held equity in a piece of the distribution system tied to the network. That is no longer the case. With the buyout complete, the entire BET ecosystem now sits fully inside Paramount Global’s corporate portfolio. What once stood as a Black-owned media institution has become another brand within a multinational entertainment conglomerate. This distinction matters because ownership and representation are not the same thing. Black culture remains one of the most powerful forces in global entertainment. Black actors, writers, directors, musicians, and producers continue to shape popular culture at every level. But influence does not equal ownership. Ownership determines who controls the platform. Ownership determines who captures the long-term economic value created by media. Ownership determines who ultimately decides what content is produced and how it reaches audiences. This does not mean Black creators will disappear from television or streaming platforms. Black culture will continue to drive audiences, shape trends, and influence global entertainment. The real question is not whether Black content will exist. The real question is what kind of Black content will be produced — and who will decide what stories are told. Who will control how our history is portrayed?Who will shape the narratives about our communities? And what will our children be taught about our culture through the media they consume? Major studios and networks understand the economic value of Black cultural influence. But when ownership of the platforms sits entirely outside the community, the power to define the message no longer belongs to the culture that created it. For decades, BET symbolized something larger than entertainment. It represented the possibility that Black entrepreneurs could build and control a national media platform. Even after the network itself became part of a corporate structure, Tyler Perry’s stake in BET+ maintained at least some connection between Black ownership and the distribution of Black-focused content. That connection is now gone. Major Media Platforms Owned by Paramount Paramount Global owns one of the largest entertainment portfolios in the world. Its holdings include broadcast networks, cable channels, streaming services, movie studios, and global distribution arms.  Broadcast Networks CBS CBS News CBS Sports CBS Television Stations Streaming Platforms Paramount+ Pluto TV CBS News 24/7 CBS Sports HQ Cable Networks Paramount Media Networks controls a large group of cable brands including:  BET BET Her MTV VH1 Nickelodeon Nick Jr. Comedy Central Paramount Network TV Land Logo CMT Pop TV Smithsonian Channel Showtime The Movie Channel Flix Film and Studio Businesses Paramount...
