News Ticker

MOUNT VERNON, NY:  (June 24, 2019) – In response to the recent spike in negative and, often, anonymous campaign communications targeting candidates in the race for Mayor of Mount Vernon, City Council President André Wallace calls on all candidates to support an immediate end to these divisive and abusive tactics.Rather than focusing on the issues that matter to the voters of Mount Vernon, candidates have either encouraged or sat idle as supporters and surrogates have generated and distributed negative robocalls, anonymous mailers, and engaged in other tactics unbefitting of the office they seek in this election.

A spirited debate about the issues is one thing; character attacks and vicious lies are entirely another.”These tactics are disgraceful, and they need to stop immediately. I have told my staff and supporters repeatedly to avoid these tactics and to focus on the issues in this race. This is unfortunately, a by-product of an age of social media that is filled with anonymous criticism and fake posts designed to undermine the citizens’ right to a free and fair election,” said Wallace.

“I call on every candidate in this race to denounce these negative tactics publicly and forcefully.”The primary election is on June 25, 2019, but the election season extends until the general election in November. These attacks are irresponsible, in some cases illegal, and are an embarrassment to the citizens of this City.
