MOUNT VERNON — Nellie A. Thornton High School Senior Neilis Santos is this year’s recipient of the annual Matthew Kevin Moore Role Model, Leadership, and Community Service Award. Santos is the Senior Class Vice President, a member of the National Language Honor Society, a Spanish tutor for 10th and 11th graders, President of the senior class community service program, and a volunteer at family daycare.
Kevin Moore, a 6th grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, presented the award in memory of his son, Matthew Kevin Moore. Matthew passed away in 2012 at age 29.
“This young lady is a leader and a role model by her actions and her many accomplishments in and out of school,” said Moore. “Her advice to the underclassman, especially the ninth graders, is to do your best. Neilis began to notice that the better her grades got, the better she felt about herself as senior year approached. She always tries to shoot for the stars and settle for the moon.”
Santos was presented with a certificate and a check for $500.00 from the Matthew Kevin Moore Foundation.
