It is alleged that Mr. Newson had become involved in a dispute with a fifty-four (54) year old victim in the hallway of 70 West Third Street. It was reported that the victim had directed Mr. Newson to leave the premises because he did not reside there.
Shortly afterwards, the suspect confronted the victim and a physical altercation followed. At this time the suspect stabbed the victim once in the abdomen with a knife. The victim was subsequently transported to Jacobi Hospital and treated for the wound and released.
Detectives investigating the incident subsequently developed information that led to the identity of Mr. Newson, which culminated with his arrest.
Mr. Newson was arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court. He has a criminal history that includes a conviction for Assault in the 3rd degree in 2012, and a conviction for Criminal and Possession of a Weapon 4th degree in 2011.
Commissioner Robert Kelly said, “This case is reflective of the diligence which detectives apply to their investigative work, ensuring that cases are fully investigated to their conclusion.”
