Mount Vernon — Mount Vernon police were alerted to suspicious activity emanating from a vehicle parked at Eastchester Lane and South Tenth Avenue by a tip provided by a concerned citizen, Sunday.
Uniformed patrol officers responding to the area discovered a suspect, later identified as Kadeem Washington, age 24, inside that same vehicle. While interviewing Washington, he directed repeatedly to place his hands in clear view of the officers, however failed to fully comply placing his hand near the console area below the visible sight of officers.
Recovered from the vehicle where Washington continued to place his hand was a .25 caliber Taurus handgun with six rounds of ammunition loaded into its magazine.
Washington, of 215 South Ninth Ave, was subsequently arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a felony, 5th Degree Criminal Possession of Marijuana, a misdemeanor and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a violation. He has two prior arrests and one felony conviction, for narcotics sales. Washington is due to be arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court later.
Commissioner Robert Kelly stated, “This is an example of how our residents can work with police to better protect our community. An illegal was removed from the streets and the sound actions of officers involved resulted in no harm to anyone.”
