Mount Vernon – It was Razorback Sunday at Mount Calvary CME Church also known as “The Promise Church,” where pastor Rev. Dr. Jeffery R. Wheeler and his congregation honored the Mount Vernon Razorback Football Team, Sunday morning, during their 11AM service.

The Razorbacks dressed in their Sunday’s Best sat in the choir loft of Mt Calvary the little church across the street from the Mount Vernon Public Library, located at 38 South 2nd Avenue, that celebrated it 70th anniversary this year, while politicians, Pastor Wheeler and other community leaders each got up to say a few words about how proud they were of these young men, who will be tomorrow’s doctors, lawyers, politicians or whatever they achieve to be.

On December 5, 2015 the Mount Vernon Razorbacks will be going to Orlando Florida to play in the Nationals. County Legislator Lyndon Williams, City Councilman Yuhanna Edwards, Council Candidate Janice Duarte, The Mount Vernon Independence Party, Coleman & Coleman and Creative Direction Construction & Design, LLC., donated several hundreds of dollars to financially support the team as they travel to Florida in their quest for a championship. As you can see from the video above, Coach Mac was visibly moved by the events of Razorback Sunday…..

The Razorbacks were established in 1979 by committed and caring families who took up the challenge to create an environment where children with an interest in football and cheer could learn the game sport along with valuable life lessons. The Razorback organization offers a safe, supportive and affordable setting bolstered by adult-to-youth and peer-to-peer mentoring. Their formula has been very successful, resulting in the majority of our participants having improved grades, going on to college, showing better discipline and a better understanding of what it takes to achieve their goals on and off the playing field.

Notable former Razorbacks include City Councilman and Democratic Mayoral Nominee, Richard Thomas, MVFD Local 107 Union President, Ernest Richardson, City Councilman Yuhanna Edwards, Detective David Clarke of MVPD – Community Affairs Bureau), Peter Clarke (MVFD), Rod Hines (MVFD), Larry Oakes (MFVD), Rick Wright (City Of Mt. Vernon Recreation Dept.) just to name a few. RAZORBACKS GO HARD OR GO HOME!!
