PBP Radio Discusses Puerto Rico Earthquakes and Disaster Relief

The crew of People Before Politics Radio briefly discussed the series of Earthquakes parts of Puerto Rico was struck by and the trustworthiness of some of the organizations claiming to provide disaster relief, Sunday, January 12, 2020.

16th Congressional candidate Sammy Ravelo echoed the sentiments of Lorraine Lopez on donating to reliable local organizations as suppose to large organizations like the Red Cross and recommend a few they trust to get relief to the people who need it.

At the end of December 2019 and in early January 2020, the southwestern part of the island of Puerto Rico was struck by a series of strong earthquakes, including six that were of magnitude 5 or greater, triggering widespread power outages and damage, leaving an already fragile Puerto Rico reeling once again. Schools, homes, and churches along the southern coastline crumbled. Hospitals evacuated patients. A signature tourist attraction collapsed into the sea. At least one person died, crushed by a wall that toppled in his home.

The largest and most damaging of this sequence occurred on January 7 at 04:24 Atlantic Standard Time and had a magnitude of 6.4 Mw and a maximum felt intensity of VII (Very strong) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. At least one person was killed and several others were injured. A 5.8 Mw  earthquake the previous day caused the destruction of a natural arch, a tourist attraction at Punta Ventana in Guayanilla.
