People’s Organization for Progress Pen Scathing Letter For Mumia Abu Jamal

People’s Organization for Progress plan rally with a coalition of young organizers called Jersey Youth For Mumia, Friday, march 26th

Last week, the People’s Organization for Progress penned a scathing letter to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge for medically imperiled journalist and political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal, who widely known while on death row for his writings and commentary on the criminal justice system in the United States.

Jamal who was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, was stricken with Covid19 and is already suffering from Congestive Heart Failure and residual liver and skin damage from enduring HepC!  Since the trial for the next 30-plus-years, Mumia, -now in his 40th year of incarceration – was held in isolation on Death Row.

On Friday, March 26th, The People’s Organization for Progress will rally with a coalition of young organizers called Jersey Youth For Mumia.

Participants will assemble and start at Newark City Hall at 12 noon and will then walk to the Federal Building to spotlight the U.S. Attorney office. At the same time, youth activists are rally at the San Francisco office of their District Attorney as gestures towards ‘Progressive reformer’ District Attorneys to come out for Mumia’s release on the strength of the new evidence that has emerged. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is a leading ‘Progressive reformer,’ but on February 4th, he went into court to block Mumia Abu Jamal’s bid for a new trial saying that his conviction and trial where all legally sound, even though the presiding judge the late Albert Sabo vowed to help “fry the nigger,” even though testimony was wrongly paid for, and even though exculpatory evidence was repressed.

Among the organizations involved are Black Men United, Seton Hall Black Student Union, Association of Black Law Students, National Lawyers Guild of Rutgers Newark, Feed the People Newark, Solidarity Jersey City and Silk City Socialists.

Among the elder presenters will be P.O.P. chairman Lawrence Hamm, Shep McDaniel from the Black Panther Party and Panther cub Zayid Muhammad…

The P.O.P. letter to Governor Tom Wolf is below…

Dear Governor Wolf

The People’s Organization for Progress is appalled beyond words to learn of the life-threatening medical neglect of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

We are just as appalled about your inaction on that significant segment of the prison population facing similar Covid19 related medical challenges- aging prisoners.

We are most appalled to learn that dozens have already died from this disease that will spread dangerously in an environment that does not in any way allow for the required social distancing necessary to check its advance.

We condemn this neglect in the most express terms and demand that your office take the appropriate action and intervention immediately to address these intolerable and inhumane conditions!

We, therefore, call upon you to immediately release Mumia and all aging prisoners to relieve those spaces from the still very clear and present dangers of this disease as a both humanitarian gesture and as a matter of addressing the most dangerous public health challenge of our time.

Let not another life be senselessly lost when they can all be saved.

Release All Aging Prisoners Now!

Lawrence Hamm,

Chair
