Ossining’s Obi Toppin Wins 2022 NBA Dunk Contest

New York Knicks Power Foward Obi Toppin won the 2022 Slam Dunk Contest during NBA All-Star Saturday Night at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. The Ossining High School grad becomes the third Knick to win the dunk contest joining Nate Robinson and Kenny “Sky” Walker.

Toppin got past Juan Toscano-Anderson in the final of the competition after throwing down a pair of dunks off the glass in the final round.  Toppin won the slam dunk contest, earning a 47 on his final dunk when he needed to do little more than put the ball in the basket after Juan Toscano-Anderson couldn’t on his previous try. “There’s been a lot of legends who have won the dunk contest, so for my name to be a part of that, I don’t take that for granted,” Toppin said. “We wanted to do some dunks that have never been seen before or done at the dunk contest, so for me to win it, I knew I had to come back with my revenge from last year and I’m glad I came out with the ‘W.’ ”

Toppin had fallen short in the finals to the Trail Blazers’ Anfernee Simons as a rookie last year in Indiana, but Toppin – who was born in the borough of Brooklyn, and graduated from Ossining High School in 2017 – made good on his vow earlier Saturday to “represent New York” in what otherwise has been a disappointing season for the Knicks. His victory marked the fifth time a Knicks player won the Slam Dunk title, joining Kenny Walker in 1989 and three-time winner Nate Robinson in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
