One Last Look – Yonkers City Court Judge Candidates – Election 2020

As we approach the 2020 Election, Black Westchester thought we would give you one last look at the Yonkers City Court Candidates. We interviewed as many as we could. Only two on the candidates we able to actually come in to the studio before we had to start observing the social distancing restrictions.

Two incumbents Judge Tom Daly and Judge Brendan McGrath and Verris Shako were the three Democratic nominees. Karen Best and Dan Romano also ran in the Democratic Primary making five candidates running for the three available seats in June.

Twenty three days after the Democratic Primary in Westchester on June 23, the Board of Elections was able to certify the results. Many Westchester residents have complained about waiting on long lines to vote on primary day, and the long delay in receiving the official vote totals.

Verris Shako, Dan Romano and Karen Best came in the top three, leaving the two incumbents drawing the short straws. Judge Tom Daly had two other lines (Republican and Conservatives) and he continued to run in the November, General Election. We interviewed all the candidates and give you one last look just ahead of Early Voting which starts Saturday, October 24th.


Verris Shako, the first African-American Female to be nominated to run for judge in Yonkers led all candidates with 9902 votes in the primary to become the number one vote getter and one step closer to making history as the first African-American female judge in Yonkers City Court.

Karen N. Best, a 34-year-old Administrative Law Judge for the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and former Public Defender comes is with the second highest vote tally with 8100 votes.

Black Westchester caught up with Judge Karen Best, Sunday, August 30th. Judge Best who is one of two African-American woman about to make history as first Black Females to sit on the bench in Yonkers City Court. She ran against the party and won the Democratic Primary and claims some Black Leaders in Yonkers still refuse to support her and she came on the show to discuss it.


Dan Romano, a lifelong Yonkers resident who has practiced law in the county and city of Yonkers for over 30 years rounds off the top three with 6977 votes. Romano narrowly defeated Judge Tom Daly by 163 votes.

Black Westchester caught up to Judge Tom Daly, Sunday, October 18, 2020 six days before Early Voting begins in New York State, Judge Daly who has had almost every line in every elections explains who he ended up continuing his bed for re-election on just the Republican and Conservative Party lines after losing the Democratic Primary.

Black Westchester hopes this make informed decisions at the ballot box. This is an important race, the Yonkers City Court Judges you elect will serve a 10 year term, which will expire December 2030.

In Westchester County and the rest of New York State registered voters have the opportunity to vote in person before Election Day. Early voting begins – Saturday, October 24th and ends Sunday, November 1st. The General Election is Tuesday, November 3rd.
