Mount Vernon Family Quarantined For Possible Exposure To The Novel Coronavirus

Mount Vernon- Mount Vernon City School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton sent out a robocall and email to parents about a Mount Vernon family that has been quarantined for possible exposure to the Novid-19.

The Superintendent announced all school building will be closed effective immediately and advised students and parents have no reason to believe there is anything to be concerned about, it is just a precaution. (Read Supt. Hamilton’s entire email below).

This is Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton, Supt of MVCSD. We have been advised by the physician of two of our students (same family, one at Columbus School and one at Rebecca Turner) that the family has been quarantined for possible exposure to the Novel Coronavirus known as Novel 19. We have been further advised by the children’s physician that the students have not shown any actual symptoms at this time. Both students will not be attending school for at least the next 2 weeks. At this time no physician offices have the ability to test for COVID-19. The test can only be done by NYS or CDC.

Out of an abundance of caution, the district has purchased state of the art disinfecting systems and crews are working on treating all buildings on a rotating basis. At this time, we have no reason to believe there is anything to be concerned about. The buildings will continue to be a safe environment for our students and staff. If this situation should change in any way please be assured that you will be notified immediately.

I am actively working with the District’s Medical Director and will be seeking guidance from the Westchester County Department of Health to ensure that this matter is addressed in an appropriate manner. We will continue to monitor the situation and will continue to keep you informed to the fullest extent possible.

At 8:25 PM, the MVCSD sent out the following media alert from Supt. Hamilton;

We have been advised by the physician of two of our students (same family, one at Columbus School and one at Rebecca Turner Elementary School) and their family have been quarantined for possible exposure to the Novel Coronavirus known as Novel 19.  We have been further advised by the children’s physician that the students have not shown any actual symptoms at this time. At this time no physician offices have the ability to test for COVID-19.  The test can only be done by New York State or the Centers for Disease Control.

Out of an abundance of caution, the district has closed all school buildings and offices effective immediately and the schools will be completely cleaned and disinfected. It is anticipated that the buildings will reopen on Monday under a normal schedule, once the cleaning program is complete.

Both students will not be attending school for at least the next two weeks.

Please be assured the Mount Vernon City School District is coordinating its response efforts in concert with the City of Mount Vernon and New York State.
