MOUNT VERNON, — The Arts at Mount Vernon will present the stage musical Dreamgirls on April 29 and 30 at 7:00 p.m. and May 1 at 3:00 p.m. in Mount Vernon High School’s auditorium. The production will be produced and directed by Evelyn Collins, the district’s Director of Arts & Gifted and Talented Education, and features 30 students from Mount Vernon, Thornton, and Mandela/Zollicoffer High Schools as cast and stage crew.
“There are tremendous benefits in providing children an opportunity to perform in theatrical productions,” said Director of Arts & Gifted and Talented Education Evelyn Collins. “These benefits include the development of strong cognitive, emotional and physical abilities, the fostering of collaboration, and the heightening of self-esteem.”

Dreamgirls is a Broadway musical, with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. The musical is based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B Acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and others. The plot
follows the story of a young female singing trio called “The Dreams,” who become music superstars.
