Memorable Black Fathers in Movies

These unforgettable onscreen portrayals of black dads have helped to change the narrative.

All  too often in Hollywood shows the Black Father as weak and poor example of blackness and fatherhood. But Danny Glover, well-known for his leading role as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film series portrays a strong black father model.

Murtaugh is a straight-laced veteran homicide detective sergeant and die-hard family man. He was a lieutenant of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the U.S. Army, and served in the Vietnam War. He joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1967 and celebrates his 50th birthday at the start of Lethal Weapon. He has begun to consider retirement, hence his catchphrase, “I’m too old for this shit”.
