The Green Party, an electoral alternative to a two-party system

unnamed-6While the mainstream media gives most of its attention in the 2016 U.S. presidential race to Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. But the the 2016 Presidential Race is a four-way race not a two-way race. The two other candidates include Libertarian Gary Johnson and Jill Stein of the Green Party. BW’s Cynthia Turnquest-Jones  stops by Hostos Community College located at 500 Grand Concourse in the Bronx, in an effort to keep our audience informed, gives a glimpse of the Green Party 2016 President and Vice President Candidates.

With less than twenty six days until Election Day as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton intensify attacks “People, Plant, and Peace Over Profit” signs greeted voters as they walked up the ramp.

The Green Party, an electoral alternative to a two-party system, joined Jill Stein and Baraka Ajamu at a Green Revolutionary Party at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. Fight the Power by Public Enemy played as voters stood with their right fist pumped in the air. The Green Party of the United States was founded on the “Four Pillars of the Green Party” – Ecological Wisdom, Social and Economic Justice, Grassroots Democracy, and Nonviolence and Peace – and party members generally embrace environmentalism, non-hierarchical participatory democracy, social justice, and respect for diversity, peace and nonviolence.

College students packed the auditorium who are interested in one of the Green Party platform which is to provide free college tuition to all qualified students at public universities and vocational school. With a belief that it is time to forgive all student and parent loans taken out to finance post-secondary and vocational education the Green Party understand the burden of a costly educational system. According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015–2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. It is projected that it takes around twenty five years to pay off a student loan which includes interest and principal. Imagine going to school for four years and having to pay twenty five years fours years.

The daughter of Eric Gardner “Erica” spoke about picking a party who is for the people. She is clearly focused on not voting for Hillary Clinton who claims that she will come to the Urban neighborhoods and make a change. She understands that Hillary Clinton used the mothers of sons who were murdered by police officers as a platform to get Black voters to sway her way. She is also not confused that Donald Trump does not qualify to sit at the round table with international leaders of the world even if he was given a cheat sheet.

The Green Party is in their fledgling state which means to rear until ready for flight or independent activity. The Green Party does not have endorsements, capital, or revenue like the Republican and Democratic Party. President Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders used social media and grassroots platforms to raise awareness amongst the young votes which is an untapped valuable vote. Salutations is given to those who are a part of The Green Party of the United States. It takes courage to stand against the Republican and Democratic Party plethora of money bags.
