STATEMENT FROM Kat Brezler, CANDIDATE FOR STATE SENATE
RE: Governor Cuomo must call a special election
Westchester, NY — “Excuse me, Mr. Governor, I am a resident of White Plains’ 37th Senatorial District and, I implore you to call a special election for our representation before the budget vote on April 1st.
“There are currently 31 registered Republicans in the State Senate and, as of today, there are 30 registered Democrats. Two of which are vacant and were formerly held by Democrats. If you, the Governor, do not call a special election before the budget vote, you will effectively disenfranchise more than 700,000 residents in these Districts. Representation matters. The residents of District 37 deserve to have a seat at the table while we negotiate a $150 billion dollar budget. It is for this reason that a special election cannot wait.
“Our budget gap is severe and we need to talk about creative approaches on how to best to bridge the gap in our finances. We need to decenter ourselves and our government around mass incarceration and legalize cannabis for adults. Massachusetts has already passed legalization and will be opening dispensaries. New Jersey is likely to pass their legalization legislation within the year. We will be flanked in the tristate area by access points, and revenue will leave our state. New York should be leading on progressive politics instead of laying in its wake. This much-needed revenue could be a dedicated funding stream targeted at ending the school to prison pipeline. We desperately need this, and it has never been more urgent for us to act on,” said Kat Brezler, candidate for State Senate.
