How Empire City Casino Is Tackling Hunger in Westchester

The US is currently in a gambling renaissance. States across the country are overturning laws to allow physical casinos, along with online gambling, to be set up in their borders. As well as providing benefits to the area in the form of employment and taxes, lots of charitable work is done by large number of these casinos. One example is that of Empire City Casino, which is helping tackle hunger in Westchester.

Empire City Casino

Empire City Casino is owned by the MGM Resorts Hotel and Casino chain. On top of being a hotel and casino, it’s also attached to the famous Yonkers Raceway, giving it the quirky moniker of a ‘racino’. Founded in 1899, it hosts a range of flat races on its dirt track surface.

It came into the ownership of MGM Resorts in 2019. This company has a literal track record of providing high-quality gambling services, both in physical and online forms. Ranking sites such as Casino Smash, which rate the best online slots, table games, and casinos, often have them at the top of their recommendations. This complements their brick-and-mortar hospitality establishments, which can be found around the world.

As a global organization, they work hard to ensure a large chunk of their profits goes back into the local area through their Community engagement program. In this, they aim to make a difference in the places where their customers and employees live.

Feeding Westchester

A lot of the casino’s charitable endeavors focus on feeding members of the local community who can’t afford to do so themselves. On many occasions, they have teamed up with Feeding Westchester, which is a branch of the Feeding America family. Every September, they get involved in Hunger Action Month, which teaches about food poverty in local areas and ensures communities are well nourished.

The Eating for Orange initiative is just one small part of this which they take part in. The hotel’s restaurant and other eateries in the local community provide educational materials and create orange-inspired dishes to raise awareness about the issues at hand.

Charitable Donations

Numerous others have benefited from their donations. The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York has served the needs of those in New York since 1917. This has been done through work by targeting hunger and taking care of neglected children, the homeless and refugees. A gift of $10,000 from the casino is going toward a new mobile food truck. This will target areas where hunger is an issue, helping the homeless and poor there.

Another $10,000 donation has gone to the Yonkers Family YMCA. Part of the larger YMCA organization, they aim to promote positive values that build the spirit, body, and mind. Their donation will help expand their hot meals program in the region.

Around $102,000 in total has been donated to eight non-profit organizations in the surrounding area. While many target hunger, other issues such as violence, employment, and disability are also addressed. With such incentives taking place, it sends a clear message to other states about how the gambling industry can give back to the areas it resides in.
