Yonkers, NY – Yonkers City Councilwoman Shanae Williams announced the creation of a Homelessness Task Force for the City of Yonkers, Monday, March 5th. This task force will focus specifically on the growing homeless population in the City of Yonkers. Members of the task force will do a full assessment of the matter and find smart solutions to resolving the issues faced by the homeless population which will then be submitted to Westchester County.
“We know that there is a huge homeless population in the City of Yonkers, most of which is concentrated in the first district,” said Councilwoman Williams. “But there are many unanswered questions, and until we can openly ask and address those questions, we cannot move forward.”
It is the responsibility of Westchester County to provide housing, funds and other resources for the homeless, however, municipalities like the City of Yonkers are faced with the day to day issues concerning the homeless population.
“That is why this task force is important and necessary. I may not have jurisdiction over the homeless, but I do represent everyone in the first district including the homeless,” said Councilwoman Williams. “Therefore I want to ensure that they have the proper housing and services they need to be safe, productive members of the community.”
The task force will consist of a diverse group of individuals from the area who are invested in making the City of Yonkers a safer place to raise their families. This includes government officials, community leaders, business leaders, and various other professionals.
“We need people who care, who understand the problem and who are willing to volunteer their time to solving the matter at hand,” said Councilwoman Williams.
