New Rochelle – A driver crashed her car into The Bagel Zone in New Rochelle, that ripped out the entire storefront, injury herself, owner of store, an employee and former Mount Vernon Mayor André Wallace, around 2pm Friday afternoon.
Wallace, the owner and employee of The Bagel Zone, located at 243 Main Street were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and then released.
“I’m okay,” Wallace shared with Black Westchester. “Just bruised up, but alive. Half a second slower and we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now.”
The majority of the front entrance was ripped down from the accident as the vehicle crashed through hitting tables and the store counter. Officials say the accident appears to have been due to driver confusion. The car had been parked in front of the business and the driver put the car in drive rather than reverse. The driver of the Jeep also sustained a minor leg injury.
While Wallace who is running in the upcoming Democratic primary for City Council says he is okay, he shared with Black Westchester that he is still shaken up.
“It happened so fast. Half a second slower, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now,” Wallace shared. “Just makes me think about how we can be here one day and gone the next. In a blink of an eye. All I could think about was what would happen to my kids if I was killed.”
BW is told the owner and the employee of the Bagel Zone are ok as well. No charges were filed for the driver of the jeep. Stay tuned to Black Westchester for more on this developing story.
