Journal News & United Black Clergy Co-Sponsor Final Mayoral Debate

Rate Article

The Journal News and United Black Clergy will co-sponsor Mount Vernon’s final mayoral debate, Tuesday, Sept. 8. The debate will take place at 7 p.m. at Friendship Worship Center, 261 E. Lincoln Ave. in Mount Vernon. Columnist Phil Reisman will moderate the debate. The primary is Sept. 10.

The 2015 Mt Vernon Democratic primary, can not come quick enough for some, with six Mayoral candidates – Mayor Davis, Clinton Young, Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Maureen Walker & Richard Thomas (Deborah Reynolds will appear on the Conservative line in the General Election but not appear in the Democratic primary) and seven city council candidates – Andre Wallace, Delia Farquharson, Diane Munro, Lisa Copeland, John Boykin, Janice Duarte (who is a Democrat running on the Independence Party line) and Cheryl Dennis who is running as an Independent (No party), all vying for two city council seats available.

Then that’s not to mention, the campaign literature littered streets and assorted signs that are infesting every lawn, wall, fence, store windows and even in some cases, plenty of public poles (which is illegal) all in 4.2 square miles, which can be a bit exasperating.

While there has only been one debate for the City Council Candidates, this will be the fifth and final Mayoral Debate, held just two days before the primary to give voters a final look at the candidates, before they cast their votes.

You can still submit debate questions via email to with “Mount Vernon” in the subject line.
