Activist and Baltimore native D.Watkins speaks about his newly released book “The Beast Side: Living (and Dying) While Black in America.” Watkins grew up on the beast side of Baltimore and went on to receive a master’s of education degree from John Hopkins University. He has dedicated his life to speaking and writing for social justice. The book is a collection of essays that Watkins calls a love story to anyone facing healthcare disparity, or education disparity. In this interview D. Watkins speaks about his thoughts on the Freddie Gray situation, his controversial “f@#! the national anthem” chapter where he discusses the forgotten verses of the Star Spangled Banner and how he’s inspiring younger kids to become journalists.
