Councilwoman Delia Farquharson Attempts To Make History As First Female Elected Mayor of Mt Vernon

Mount Vernon – Freshman City Councilwoman Delia Farquharson announced via video on social media (see below), Thursday, February 7th, that she will be running for mayor of Mount Vernon in the upcoming Democratic Primary in June. If elected Councilwoman Farquharson would make history as the first female elected mayor in the city.

Councilwoman Farquharson is a mental health professional in private practice as a Concierge Therapist. In addition to her private practice, Farquharson works in community mental health as a clinician treating children and adults. Previously, she worked as director of a community based reintegration program for children in the foster care system. Farquharson was also part of a team responsible for the implementation of Trauma Systems Treatment (TST) in a large milieu residential treatment setting in New York. Farquharson is Social Emotional Advisor for RIISE Inc., a family support organization working with several private schools in NYC. In this role she conducts workshops and trainings on topics of emotional and mental wellness.

Councilwoman Farquharson is active in her community and is co creator of the annual Wellness Week in Mount Vernon. She is also co-convener of My Brother’s Keeper, a presidential initiative designed to improve outcomes for youth. Ms. Farquharson volunteers her services as a social worker in an after school program. Farquharson received her Masters of Science in Social Work from the Columbia University and was twice, previously elected to the school board in Mount Vernon, New York, and is currently in her second year or her first term in the Mount Vernon City Council.

Councilwoman Farquharson will face Mayor Richard W. Thomas, Council President Andre Wallace, and jail attendant Carlo Jean-Baptiste, Sr in the upcoming Democratic Primary in June.

Others rumored to be running for Mayor of Mount Vernon include former Mayor Ernest D. Davis, two-time congressional candidate Derickson Lawrence, former Mount Vernon Police Commissioner and 2017 City Council Candidate Clyde Isley. None have confirmed or denied their candidacy when asked by Black Westchester.

The city Democratic committee is expected to endorse its candidate for mayor, Tuesday, February 19th. Candidates will start collecting nominating signatures, Tuesday, February 26th, to get on the primary ballot.
