(Hawthorne, NY) – An inmate at the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla was arrested on a manslaughter charge Tuesday in connection with a deadly assault on a fellow prisoner.
Westchester County Police charged William Johnson, 20, of Rollins Street, Yonkers, with Manslaughter 2nd Degree, a felony. He is accused of punching another prisoner in the head, causing that man to suffer fatal injuries when he fell to the floor and struck his head.
The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 30th. Johnson and the victim, Bryce Neville, 18, of Mount Vernon, had argued earlier in the day. Johnson is accused of punching Bryce from behind as the men walked through a common area at the jail.
Bryce – who had been in custody Jan. 14 on a probation violation and due back in court on March 5 – was taken to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla in critical condition following the attack. He died of his injuries on Feb. 4.
Johnson’s arraignment is anticipated to occur on Thursday in Mount Pleasant Town Court. He is facing a second-degree manslaughter charge, a felony.
The arrest followed an investigation by detectives from the County Police General Investigations Unit and investigators from the Department of Correction Special Investigations Unit.
Johnson was booked Jan. 8, 2019, and had an outstanding charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He had faced previous charges of criminal mischief and criminal obstruction of breathing/blood circulation, according to jail records.
