Community Leaders Address Violence In Schools And Call For Superindent And School Administrators To Resign

Dozens gathered outside the Mount Vernon Board of Education, Tuesday, April 19th to rally against the rising violence in the district’s schools and call for the resignation of the Superintendent and school administrators who they say are aware of the problem and have done little to prevent it. The group held a press conference just before a scheduled school board meeting calling for accountability after the killing of 16-year-old Kayla Green. The problems that were not addressed in school violently spilled out into the streets of Mount Vernon following a citywide motorcade and celebration for the MVHS Men’s Basketball team’s 12th state championship.

After the press conference, the group went inside to join others who were scheduled to speak at the school board meeting to get their concerns on the record. Speakers included Jesse Van Lew of Save Mount Vernon who was issued a cease-and-desist letter from the council of superindents. See videos of some of the speakers below.
