Congressman Jamaal Bowman resoundingly defeated Westchester County legislators Vedat Gashi and Catherine Parker for the Democratic nomination for New York’s newly redrawn 16th Congressional district in Tuesday’s primary.

In response to the election results in the 16th Congressional District, we spoke to individuals of several organizations who supported and/or endorsed Congressman Bowman including Sochie Nnaemeka, Director of the New York Working Families Party, MaryAnn Carr, Westchester Democratic Committee 1st Vice President, and Subomi Macaulay, the countywide President of the Westchester Black Women’s Political Caucus (WBWPC) to get their sentiments in celebration of Bowman’s victory in the Democratic Primary.

“Jamaal Bowman has been a courageous fighter for our children and families in Congress,” Sochie Nnaemeka, shared with Black Westchester. “He introduced the visionary Green New Deal for Public Schools legislation, protected families from unjust eviction, and fought to defend our democracy. We’re thrilled to continue partnering with Jamaal to ensure that working families in NY-16 can truly thrive.”

“Jamaal Bowman’s primary victory is evidence of his strong leadership,” MaryAnn Carr shared with Black Westchester. “There is not only clear satisfaction in the work that he has done but also belief that his experience and proven dedication to the needs of the people will benefit his district and many others beyond.”

“Jamaal Bowman’s resounding primary win speaks to his proven leadership.  Bowman took office at the beginning of the worst pandemic in our country’s history,” Subomi Macaulay shared with Black Westchester. “He rose to the occasion and worked with his colleagues in Washington to provide the necessary support and help needed for the people in his district and the nation during those dark and difficult days.

He’s accessible to the people he represents. His strong ties and roots in the community earned him the respect of his constituents, listening and working with them to find solutions for the greater good of all.   Throughout his entire career, whether as an educator in schools or an elected official in government, Jamaal Bowman has been about serving the entire community, leaving no one out.  He has led with empathy, love, and compassion.

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that the WBWPC endorses this hard-working, dedicated public leader, Representative Jamaal Bowman, for re-election to the House of Representatives for District 16.  We stand in peace and love on this journey with him.”

Congressman Bowman is now one step closer to his second term but first must face Republican Dr. Miriam Flisser, the former mayor of Scarsdale, in November.
