Mount Vernon — It was a cloudy day full of rain and drizzle and an occasional mist, followed by patchy fog in the evening, Tuesday, but that didn’t dampen the spirits or stop Cathlin Gleason from standing outside the Mount Vernon Public Library greeting all the passed by and encouraging them to come in a vote for the Library Trustee position on the ballot and the MVPL budget. From seven in the morning when the polls opened, Cathlin’s warm personality and bright perspective on living, seemed to make the dreary day much brighter for all who crossed her path.
They say hard work pays off. Cathlin showed that Tuesday, even though she was the front-runner in the race, she was the only Trustee candidate present from the time the polls open until they closed. 14 hours, 2 pairs of sneakers and 2 changes of clothes later, it all paid off, when she was announced the overwhelming winner and newest elected Library Trustee. Cathlin makes history as the first Irish-American woman to be elected Trustee of the MVPL.
After a full day of campaigning, she greeted her friends, family, and supporters at Maggie Spillane’s located at 572 Gramatan Avenue and gave a brief acceptance speech where she thanked all involved who supported her.
“First and foremost the one person I definitely need to thank is my father, cause if not for my father, I would have never gotten involved in community things what so ever,” Cathlin shares as she remembers her dad, former longtime Mount Vernon Fire Commissioner James “Jimmie” Gleason. She spoke of his influence in her life and how even being selected at #6 in the polls was a great sign, because it was her dad’s birthday and his lucky number.
Mt. Vernon Councilwoman Roberta Apuzzo, former Mayor Ernest Davis, Library Trustee Brian Johnson, Acting MVPL Trustee Oscar Davis Jr, and several of Cathlin’s family members and friends gathered at Maggie’s to celebrate with her.
The Mount Vernon Public Library Board of Trustees appointed Ms. Cathlin Gleason as a Library Trustee, to serve until the end of June to fill an unexpired term, left vacant when Sean McIntyre resigned for family reasons that required his time. Gleason now official elected will serve the remaining four years of McIntyre’s term.
BW congratulates and salutes Catlin Gleason on her history-making win!
