Black Law Enforcement Responds to DNC Memo on Black Lives Matter

On, Wednesday, August 31st, the hacker (or hackers) operating under the name Guccifer 2.0 (previously associated with a number of breaches of Democratic National Committee material) released a controversial document that purportedly outlined recommended practices for Democratic candidates’ engaging with the Black Lives Matter movement in 2015.

A number of documents supposedly accessed from the computer of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi were posted to Guccifer 2.0’s blog, among them a 19 November 2015 memo to Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) workers from staffer Troy Perry.

The national fraternal organization, Blacks in Law Enforcement of America (BLEA) issued a statement Friday responding to Guccifer 2.0’s Black Lives Matter document leak;

The recent release of the Democratic National Committee addressing how to handle the Black Lives Matter Movement in this 2016 election cycle is not only disturbing but blatantly disrespectful to black people whose political interest is Social Justice.

As Black Law Enforcement Professionals, who believe in BLM and understand the need for proper policies and legislation to end an unbalanced, racist Criminal Justice System, that lacks proper oversight and accountability of the triad of the justice system; Police, Courts, and Corrections.

As Black Law Enforcement Professionals, we are demanding all Democrats, especially Black Democratic Elected Officials and political leaders to denounce this memo. We have watched to many black men, women, children and Black Law Enforcement unjustly killed by white officers. We have watched for too long a justice system turn a blind eye to police criminality without any Restoratory Justice for Black people.

We have asked the question, do Black Lives Matter to Black Politicians? How can they when Black Lives Don’t Matter to the political party they represent. If the DNC and Black Democrats do not correct their attitude toward what is today’s “civil rights movement” a failure to do so will continue to result in anger, frustration, ineffectiveness, mistrust and defeat.

Black Westchester first became aware of the document when Shaun King posted it on his Facebook page, Wednesday afternoon, (see copy of document below).

The Black Lives Matter movement also expressed disappointment with the contents of the revealed material in a statement posted to Facebook and Twitter:

We are disappointed at the DCCC’s placating response to our demand to value all Black life. Black communities deserve to be heard, not handled. People are dying.

Whether Republican, Democrat or otherwise, our elected officials have an ethical and democratic responsibility to make legislation that reflects the needs of their constituents. That includes Black people facing life-threatening challenges because of racist, failed policies.

We demand, and are fighting every day for, a radical transformation of American democracy where all Black lives are valued.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill, in a statement, called the leak an “attempt by Russia to influence our election,” while saying Pelosi “does not support the content or attitude of this memo. On many occasions, Leader Pelosi has publicly supported the ideals embraced by the Black Lives Matter movement and continues to do so.”
