Philadelphia based rapper Beanie Sigel is in surgery Friday morning following a shooting in Pleasantville where he and another man was injured. The 40-year-old former member/artist of Dame Dash Music Group and Roc-A-Fella Records rapper was taken into surgery at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the torso, police said. Police confirmed the victim as Dwight Grant, which is Sigel’s government name.
“All I can confirm at this time is that Mr. Dwight Grant was shot this morning after an altercation on Spruce Avenue,” Pleasantville Police Chief Jose Ruiz said, adding that his condition is “serious.”
Grant suffered a “through and through” wound that went into his abdomen and out his back, the chief said. The shooting was reported shortly before 9:30 a.m.
There is no word on exactly what transpired but Beanie and a second person was injured during the shoot out. the second victim refused hospital attention. There is no information as to the gunman’s identity or the shooting’s motive. Nor was it clear what the State Property artist was doing in New Jersey.
Sigel was shot once before during a 2006 bank robbery in Philadelphia. In 2003, he was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly fired 6 bullets into a Philadelphia nightclub, sticking a man in the foot and stomach. He was later acquitted.
In August, Sigel was released from a two-year federal jail sentence for tax evasion.
Pleasantville Police and members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office remain at the scene on Spruce Avenue, which the chief described as “a quiet area.” Ruiz also said that officers are at the hospital.
