Members look on as American Women of African Heritage, Inc (AWAH) President Gloria Welcome presents a check for $45,000 to Westchester Community College Foundation for its endowed scholarship fund. It is accepted by WCC President Dr. Belinda Miles. In her acceptance remarks, Dr. Miles expresses gratitude to AWAH on behalf of the College, the Foundation, and students who will benefit from the gift. AWAH’s Second Chance Award is presented annually to an eligible student.
In each of the last ten years, AWAH’s Second Chance Award has helped defray tuition and associated expenses. This scholarship is awarded to a female student of African ancestry who has returned to college after an interruption in education. The award supports AWAH’s conviction that education empowers women. AWAH President Welcome has noted: “Education not only leads to career opportunities and higher income, but it also creates positive role models for others who struggle.” AWAH’s gift of $45,000 will make it possible for many more women to continue their college education.
