17th Congressional District Candidate Asha Castleberry stopped by the People Before Politics Radio, Sunday, December 15, 2019, to discuss her congressional candidacy (see video below).
Who is Asha Castleberry-Hernandez? She is a Veteran, Mother, Professor and National Security Professional, one of the candidates running for the vacant Congressional seat in New York’s 17th Congressional District, representing parts of Westchester and Rockland Counties, currently held by Nita Lowey.
The former Tarrytown resident, and now Elmsford resident is a graduate of Hampton University and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Asha also spent a sufficient amount of time studying Law and Business abroad in China and international politics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
A current Major in the U.S. Armed Forces and a combat veteran, Asha is “Ready to serve”. From 2012 to 2015, Asha served a 30-month deployment supporting United States Central Command in Kuwait, Iraq, and Jordan as a Senior Advisor on Security Cooperation and the Anti-ISIS Military Campaign. During the Obama Administration, Asha also served as the Special Advisor at the United States mission to the United Nations, working on peacekeeping policy.
While a Major in the Reserves, Asha is also a professor at Baruch College, teaching Foreign Policy and International Politics. Before making Baruch College her educational home, Asha was a lecturer at Fordham University instructing on American Foreign Policy, International Politics, U.S. Security Policy, International Political Economy, and United Nations Peacekeeping; and Foreign Policy at the George Washington University.
Although Asha is a first- time candidate, she is no novice when it comes to working in politics. Asha served as an advisor for veteran affairs and foreign policy for Hillary Clinton’s presidential run in 2016 and Kristen Gillibrand’s senate run in 2010. In addition to serving on campaigns, Asha has served on the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) Veteran & Military Families Council.
