Healthcare Workers Celebrate Cancellation of Vote on the Anti-American Health Care Act

“Today is a tremendous victory for not only the physical and economic health of America, but also the fundamental moral health of our nation. Millions of people across the country stood up together for our core principle that quality affordable healthcare is an inalienable right for all Americans. We declared that we are connected to and responsible for our family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. This shared conviction was the driving force behind the powerful people’s movement that arose to defeat the bill.

“Youth, seniors, working families, people with disabilities, doctors, nurses, caregivers, healthcare providers, community members and advocates flooded Congress with rallies, office visits, civil disobedience, press conferences, calls, emails and social media. This victory proves that we can build a movement strong enough to resist the far-right attacks of the Trump administration.

“The Anti-American Health Care Act would have cut coverage for 24 million people; slashed care for children, seniors and working families; killed jobs and hurt our entire economy; all to give a $600 billion tax break to the rich. Thankfully, because of the activism of the American people, we have defeated this attack on healthcare, at least for now.

“We know this is just the beginning. We will celebrate this major win and then, together with our community allies, raise our voices much, much louder to fight for our vision of a just society with dignity, security, rights and equal opportunity for all.”
